Will Joseph Cook- ‘Sweet Dreamer’
You have to feel sorry for
someone releasing their debut album on the same day as Kendrick’s ‘Damn’ drops,
but Kent born indie singer-songwriter Will Joseph Cook has to persevere. The singles
of his that I had heard prior to the release of this record were strong;
positive, carefree, happy tunes that instantly placed the listener on a beach
somewhere down South, and this therefore meant I had high hopes for this
record.
On first impression, Cook has
acquired the general formula of how to create a good indie-pop record, catchy
hooks paired with jangly guitar chords and infectious choruses. With the
current climate of leather clad indie artists out there, Cook is actually a breath
of fresh air; a refreshing nod to artists like Darwin Deez, Vampire Weekend and
Phoenix does not go amiss in 2017.
It seems almost impossible to
feel unhappy when listening to ‘Sweet Dreamer’. Tracks like ‘Girls Like Me’, ‘Take
Me Dancing’ & ‘For Thursday’ are funky, cheerful songs that enable the
listener to remain in good spirits whilst listening. All these tracks, and
others, display Cook’s true strength, melodic choppy tunes that effortlessly
flow through your eardrums and are instantly catchy.
This record is in no way genre defining or anything, but it is sure to stand Will Joseph Cook in good stead for the future and it is certainly a confident debut album from a young man who is surprisingly way ahead of his age.
