The xx- 'Say Something Loving' Single Review

The XX- ‘Say Something Loving’

The xx’s latest single ahead of their 3rd studio album ‘I See You (Due to be released on the 13th of January) is ‘Say Something Loving, a near 4 minute long tale that appears to set the band in a whole new light. The track begins with an Alessi Brothers sample from 1976 with the line “Before it slips away” reverberating around the listeners ears, then a light, bouncy Jamie xx beat flows in seamlessly before the glorious harmony of Romy and Oliver Sim help create a gorgeous sound. The song’s chorus states “You say something loving; it’s so overwhelming; the thrill of affection; feels so unfamiliar”, truly displaying the group’s songwriting ability is greatly aided by this theme of love, loss and lust. If ‘On Hold’ and ‘Say Something Loving’ are something to go by, then The xx’s new LP appears to be a somewhat cheerier affair than their previous efforts, however the new songs still harnesses the key essence of what makes this band so brilliant, emotionally fuelled swoons that gently caress its way through its running. I for one am extremely excited to see what ‘I See You’ has to offer when it is released.
