Ed Sheeran- ‘Shape of You’ & ‘Castle on the
Hill’ Review
Ah yes the Nation’s favourite
Kermit the frog lookalike is back. Mr Sheeran completely abandoned the public
eye in 2016, shutting down his social media for the year to seemingly solely
focus on creating new material after the extensive touring and plugging he had
done for his previous album ‘X’. However he has now returned with two brand new
singles, ‘Shape of You’ & ‘Castle on the Hill’
Upon first listen, ‘Shape of You’
begins somewhat like a Clean Bandit song with a reggae-esque dance beat filling
the background. Sheeran then enters the song with a fast paced singing style
that he actually, surprisingly pulls off, successfully managing to make the song
to sound good. The chorus hook of “I’m in love with your body” gets a bit
tedious after a while, however Sheeran has done what he does best, producing catchy
pop songs, albeit with a slightly new style compared to his older material.
Whereas, ‘Castle on the Hill’ is
a nostalgic filled ballad that sounds like Bryan Adams, yet 20 years too late.
It doesn’t appear to be a great song in my opinion with Sheeran straining his
vocals at certain points to breaking point, which does not result in a
particularly pleasant experience for the listener. I’m sure that Ed’s diehard
fans with enjoy this anthem, but for me, it’s not particularly exciting and is
rather tiresome.
Fans can expect a full LP from Ed
sometime later this year.
